The Waupaca Community Children’s Theatre will be holding auditions for its summer musical production of Disney’s “The Lion King”, Jr.
Based on the Broadway production and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s “The Lion King” is a show about identity, family and responsibility and features several popular songs written by Elton John and Tim Rice.
“The Lion King” is the story of Simba, an adventurous and energetic lion cub who is next in line to be king of the Pride Lands, a thriving and beautiful region in the African savanna. When Simba’s father Mufasa is killed by his uncle Scar, though, Simba is led to believe that his father’s death is his fault, and he is encouraged to run away forever. Scar seizes power and with his already unstable mind deteriorating, the Pride Lands experiences a darkness and desolation from which only Simba can save the animals of the kingdom.
In addition to the lions Simba, Mufasa and Scar, featured characters include the baboon Rafiki, the lionesses Sarabi, Nala and Sarafina, the hyenas Shenzi, Banzi and Ed, the hornbill Zazu, the meerkat Timon and the warthog Pumbaa along with additional lionesses, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, antelopes and wildebeests.
The show has a number of popular musical theatre songs including “Circle of Life”, “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King”, “Hakuna Matata”, “Be Prepared”, “They Live In You”, “Shadowland” and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”.
Auditions will be held Tuesday, April 23 from 3:30-6:00 p.m. at the Waupaca Learning Center’s music room on Shoemaker Road. Auditionees need to come prepared with a short song to sing and may be asked to read from a script. Any youth auditioning without a parent or guardian present must have a signed note from home stating that he or she has permission to audition. Parents are also responsible for picking up their child promptly at
the end of auditions.

Rehearsals, tentatively beginning June 10, will be held Monday through Thursday mornings from 9:30a.m.-12:00p.m. at the Waupaca Middle School’s Knoepfel Auditorium. Four performances will take place in the auditorium during the week of July 22-25.
